DANIEL M. SCHWARTZ, M.D.

Associate Professor of Ophthalmology
Director, Retinal Service
Director, Veterans Administration Retinal Service

Two years ago I suffered the trauma of a detached retina.  I was sent on an emergency basis to the University of California Medical Center, San Francisco.  Dr. Daniel M. Schwartz took my case and operated on my left eye on a Saturday morning.  Prior to the operation I had lost all but a fraction of the vision in the left eye and was seeing a black like no other black in this world.  I was terrified.  Dr. Schwartz saved the vision in my eye.  The healing process took months and his sincere confidence gave me the patience I needed to keep up good hope while the vision in my eye slowly returned to pristine clarity.  I will be forever grateful!

Going through the trauma galvanized my inner vision and gave me a greater depth of understanding about what I want to create, and, when I thought about micro surgery on the delicate infrastructure of the eye and the patience, delicacy and extreme concentration that Dr. Schwartz would have had to have had during the surgery I was inspired to go into intricate detail in the rendering of this vision of a cherry tree in full springtime blossom.  Working on the painting was part of my healing process.  It was inspired by and is dedicated to him.
