  Petie

Petie was the first pet portrait I did.  Paula's cat Petie died and she was heartbroken at the loss.  She asked me if I would paint a portrait of the kittie for her.  Every morning, Petie would climb onto her bed and very gently touch her with his velvet paw to wake her up.  She gave me a photo of Petie watching her as the one she wanted, along with a few more.  Photos do not always have the details needed, like, color of the eyes and markings in the fur.  It took a few pictures to make a composite for this portrait.

This was a very sweet natured cat and you can see his character coming through.

One of the most amazing things for me working on the picture was the fur.  Petie's expression is as alive and full of consciousness as any person I've painted but the face is covered with fur.  A furry face!  I had to laugh.

  Pippin

Dave and Marge have seven cats.  They gave me at least 100 pictures to scan through to choose one for a portrait.  Pippin's was the best.  While working on this picture I was also amused.  This time because it was a black and white cat.  How do you paint a color portrait of a black and white cat?  There is a whole lot more mischief in Pippin than Petie.  He's a different personality.
