        Panoramic Photographs -

This is a new series.  Below is an explanation of how it began.

Evolution of the panoramic photo series

People often say, "just take a picture of it."  The amount of space incorporated into a painting is much larger than can be captured by a single picture from a camera. "Painting space", the amount of space represented in a painting can be much larger than the amount of space captured by a single photograph.  It takes a long time to complete a painting; more time than a single sitting.   In order to work on a piece in the studio I started to photograph the area in multiple pictures and then combine them with Photoshop into a large mural format.  These "reference" photos have now become a form of art for me.

For a comparison, see the images to the left.  The painting encompasses more space than a single photograph of the area.

While visiting friends in Idaho I had the good luck to see a private photo litho edition that was made by Picasso.  It was wonderful.  He combined images that related to each other along with a silhouette cut-out that related to the under image as well as the image contained in the silhouette.  I was very moved by his brilliance and always wanted to do something along those lines.  Finally, with the composite murals and cherry blossoms I have been able to create something along similar lines.

The dappled light and delicate shadows of this area caught my eyeMore than twenty photos make up this picture.

I went with my friends to this painting site and could not finish the picture in an afternoon.  It takes an hour to get to the place so I decided to do a photo mural of the place in order to continue working on it at the studio.  The location is called "Lands End" and the view is looking from the California coast toward Japan.

I thought I would try a vertical format with this piece.  Compare, again, the relative amount of space shown in a single photograph compared to the composite for "painting space".

"A Walk In The Park"

While I am taking photographs for a mural I notice people walking through the picture plane.  There is something enticing about the idea of time and movement.  These are my first two composites keeping the landscape static and allowing moving figures to remain making their passage through the photograph.
