The mural project started when a company in Japan inquired about getting a 300' mural done for their store in Tokyo.  I proposed one of the cherry trees (the "Fire Cherry").  We could not agree on a price so that project did not go forward.  But I had gotten the mural bug and started to pursue making murals.  I've had three commissions so far and really enjoy working that large.  I can use my whole body to make paint strokes.  It's a wonderfully exhilarating feeling.

My major painting medium is encaustic.  It is an ancient medium used as far back as the megalithic era.  I thought it would be interesting to look at the images created by the artists who invented medium.  The caves of Lascaux were painted with a form of encaustic.  When I looked at those images I was really moved by how sophisticated the art was.  The world view was different.  There are animals everywhere in those early paintings.  We don't have nearly that many left.  Humans are everywhere now.  When we paint a picture of an animal, we paint a single creature.  The ancient artists painted animals on top of animals.  That's how many there must have been around at that time.  Humans were the minority then.

The encaustic medium was also used by the Minoans and Ancient Egyptians.  I looked at Minoan art as well and found that I liked the images they made.  Their work is very 'modern' in treatment with flat figure forms and very bold colors.

The image is taken from a large wall mural found in Santorini.
